It started as director Bryan Fogel's own amateur doping experiment and turned into something much bigger after his contact, Russian anti-doping lab director Grigory Rodchenkov, revealed the actual state-run doping program behind Russia's medal haul at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Shah Rukh Khan plays a disgraced former captain of the Indian men's hockey team who redeems himself by coaching the underfunded women's national team to a fictional World Cup win. It's a genuinely significant film for putting women's field hockey, and Bollywood sports films generally, into India's mainstream culture.

Villagers in 1893 British India, facing a punishing tax called lagaan that they can't pay, are offered a way out by a cruel British officer: beat his men at cricket, a game none of them have ever played, and the tax is cancelled for three years. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, one of only three Indian films ever nominated in that category.

This documentary follows the real Alex Honnold's attempt to climb El Capitan's 3,000 foot face in Yosemite without a rope, a feat he actually completed on June 3, 2017, becoming the first person ever to do so. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Two estranged brothers, one an ex Marine, one a physics teacher moonlighting as a fighter to save his house, collide at the same winner take all MMA tournament. The tournament itself is fictional, but the fight choreography was built with real MMA trainers and fighters to move like actual MMA, not boxing with a cage bolted on.

Clint Eastwood directs and stars as a reluctant trainer who takes on a determined 31 year old waitress, played by Hilary Swank, chasing a professional boxing career most gyms wouldn't let her near. Aamir Khan plays a former wrestler, based on the real Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trains his daughters Geeta and Babita to become India's first internationally competitive female wrestlers. Geeta Phogat really did become the first Indian female wrestler to win Commonwealth Games gold, in 2010.
