Kate Douglass Breaks the Same World Record Twice in One Day

23.49 in the morning heats, then 23.19 in the final — the American sprinter lowered the 50m freestyle world record twice before the day was over.

American swimmer Kate Douglass broke the women's 50m freestyle world record twice in the same day at the Pan Pacific Championships — 23.49 in the morning heats, then 23.19 in the evening final, taking almost three tenths off her own morning mark in a single day.

She was candid about how it felt in the moment: "I had to do a few double takes, I was not really sure I was seeing that right because that time just seems like crazy-fast to me. Even this morning, going twenty-three four seemed crazy. Twenty-three one is scarily close to twenty-two, and that's just not something I thought that female sprinting was going to get to anytime soon."

The 50m freestyle is one length, no turns — the purest test of raw speed in the pool, which is exactly what makes breaking the same record twice in a matter of hours so unusual: it means the second swim wasn't a fluke chasing an old number, it was a genuinely faster swimmer than she'd been that same morning.

Douglass picked up three medals in a roughly two-hour span that day at Pan Pacs — the world record swims were the headline, but they came inside a broader day of genuinely dominant swimming.
